- Power Steering Pump
-
- Most power steering
- pumps are vane
- pumps. In this
- type of pump, a set
- of six to ten vanes
- rotate inside an
- elliptical pump
- ring. As power
- steering fluid is
- carried from the
- area along the long
- elliptical axis to
- the short axis, it
- is forced out of
- the pump and into
- the power steering
- system.
-
- Power steering
- pumps are powered
- with a fan belt. A
- worn or loose belt
- allows slippage
- which can not
- always be detected.
- Pulley alignment
- may also cause a
- problem. A spring
- loaded seal
- prevents leakage
- around the pump
- shaft. Today's
- pumps are outfitted
- with prepacked ball
- bearings. These
- are sealed at each
- end and do not
- require periodic
- lubrication.
- Although most pumps
- run on sealed ball
- bearings, and the
- shaft is sealed
- from the housing,
- pumps may sometimes
- need attention.
- Also, the sealing
- surfaces may be
- worn enough to leak
- air or power
- steering fluid.
